A Speech Pathologist is trained at University to assess and identify speech and language delay/disorders and provide therapy to individuals who present with these difficulties. The focus is always to improve a child’s abilities to express themselves, understand others and develop their social skills and/or literacy skills. They collaborate with the parents, other health care professionals and educators.
A Speech Pathologist will implement strategies to and support carers to implement these at home reinforce new concepts and develop skills in receptive and expressive language, articulation, play skills, reading and spelling skills.
Sessions will tend to be weekly or fortnightly and consist of 1-hour visits. Speech pathology intervention is evidence-based, which means the strategies, techniques, resources, and homework has been researched and studied over many years to prove that it is beneficial and effective.
Sessions will have a beginning, middle and an end. Sessions build on strategies and discussions from previous sessions.
Speech therapy sessions will require the parents and/or carer(s) to be involved and hands-on. It is important for parents, teachers, and other team members to share information regarding the success and barriers of implementing the suggested strategies and supports and the child’s progress. This improves therapy outcomes.
